Former NFL player, Joel Rufus French, has been sentenced to 196 months in prison for defrauding Medicare and the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs out of $197 million. He will also be required to pay $110,753,619 in restitution and surrender nearly $17 million from his bank accounts and other assets. French was convicted in February on charges of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud, conspiracy to engage in money laundering, and conspiracy to offer, pay, solicit and receive kickbacks. The DOJ alleges that French targeted elderly Americans with unnecessary orthotic braces and obtained health insurance and personal information through these schemes.
