The NO FAKES Act, a Senate bill aimed at protecting individuals like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt from unauthorized uses of their likeness by generative AI, has been introduced by WME’s co-chair, Christian Muirhead, to drummed up interest in the bill. The bill would make companies and individuals liable for creating and distributing unauthorized digital replicas of someone's voice or likeness, and would also hold platforms accountable for hosting such deepfakes if they were made without consent. The coalition behind the bill includes CAA, Disney, OpenAI, SAG/AFTRA, the Recording Academy and YouTube. The goal is to get the bill through the Senate before summer before the summer, and then the House. Critics argue that it goes too far in regulating the digital space and would stifle AI innovation.
