Democrats have criticized the White House's latest counter-proposal to end the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown, claiming it falls short of addressing their concerns about the administration's immigration crackdown. The White House has agreed to expand the use of body-worn cameras and limit ICE operations around sensitive locations, including schools and hospitals. However, Democrats argue that the offer fails to meet several key demands, including a comprehensive ban on masks and face coverings for immigration officers and a requirement to obtain a judicial warrant before entering private property. While some provisions in the proposal are a step in the right direction, Democrats want to see these measures ultimately codified into law. The administration has also agreed to increase oversight of DHS detention facilities and require officers to identify themselves and their agency when requested.
