A suspended member of the Georgia House of Representatives has announced she is running for the state Senate despite being charged with COVID-19 unemployment fraud. This comes as two former colleagues, former Reps. Dexter L. Sharper and Karen L. Bennett, along with state Rep. Sharon Henderson, have already pleaded guilty to similar offenses. The charges were brought by the U.S. Department of Justice and allege that these officials lied on unemployment applications to collect tens of thousands of dollars in federally funded pandemic benefits. Despite these charges, Henderson did not resign and her suspension will continue until resolution of the case is resolved. The cases follow other high-profile prosecutions involving fraud tied to pandemic-era relief programs.
