A 2,000-year-old papyrus fragment by an Ancient Greek philosopher known as Empedocles has been discovered, revealing 30 previously unpublished verses by him. The discovery was discovered in the archives of the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology (IFAO). The first edition, translation and commentary of the verses have been published in the book L'Empédocle du Caire. The material sheds new light on links between EmpedOCles and later thinkers, suggesting that the discovery could help understand Empedocrates' ideas and place his work more clearly within Greek philosophy.
