Far-left Los Angeles politicians are planning a takeover of the LAPD, which would give them control over the way the city is policed. The plan involves shifting power to the City Council from Karen Bass and the LA Board of Police Commissioners, and includes drastic changes to LAPD operations such as stopping officers from working with ICE agents, restricting traffic stops of black and brown people, and restricting the use of tear gas at protests. The police union has criticised the plan, stating it would “de-police’ Los Angeles. The move is being driven by some of City Hall’s most hardline councilmembers, including Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez and mayoral hopeful Nithya Raman. It could lead to more sweeping changes to staffing levels, funding priorities, and policing strategy across the city.
