Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, a member of the Supreme Court, broke with her fellow liberal justices in a decision to support a challenge to Colorado's "conversion therapy" ban, which bars licensed counselors from engaging in practices that attempt to alter a minor's sexual orientation or gender identity. Jackson's colleagues voted for Christian counselor Kaley Chiles in her free speech challenge to the law, arguing that it could impair the States' ability to regulate medical care and potentially harm the health and wellbeing of Americans. The majority opinion by Justice Neil Gorsuch included five conservatives, including liberal Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, who all agreed that Colorado's law targets Chiles' speech differently.
