A record 85 people have gone to the ER for tick bites this month, the most in a decade, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. The number of people sickened by tick bites has steadily risen, with tick activity at its worst in the Northeast and Midwest. In the last five years, Michigan has seen a nearly 170% increase in Lyme disease, and New Jersey health officials have issued a warning about the rise of Lyme in the state. To prevent exposure to ticks, wear clothing that covers your arms and legs and tuck your pants into socks, as recommended by the National Institutes of Health, and use bug spray. Climate change has contributed to a rise in tick populations, giving ticks more favorable conditions to multiply.
