ISS astronauts take out the space trash

The Northrop Grumman Cygnus XL freighter, which arrived at the International Space Station on Sept. 18, 2025, is being jettisoned away from the station and is set to burn into Earth's atmosphere, carrying thousands of pounds of garbage produced on the ISS. The ISS, which orbits Earth at a speed of 17,500 mph (28,000 km/h), is currently scheduled to be in the Pacific Ocean around 2030, although some U.S. lawmakers have proposed extending its operations to 2032.
