Scientists have discovered the first black hole ever discovered, Cygnus X-1, which emits 'dancing jets' that travel as bright as thousands of suns and travel 335 million mph. The study, led by radio astronomer Steve Prabu from the University of Oxford, found that these jets are among the most energetic phenomena in the cosmos. The black hole's mass is 21 times larger than the sun and it is locked in a binary orbit with a companion star called HDE 226868. The researchers were able to measure these jet-streams due to their proximity to the companion star. They also found that about 10 per cent of the energy released as matter falls towards the black hole is carried away by the jets. This discovery could help scientists understand how black holes influence the evolution of the universe.
