Unemployment rate increases in county, according to state EDD report

The unemployment rate in San Diego County increased to 4.7% in January, up from the December estimate of 4.4% and above the year-old rate of 3.5%, according to data from the state Employment Development Department (EDD). This rate compares with the 5.5% for California and 4.8% for the nation during the same period. Trade, transportation, and utilities lost the most jobs over the month, with a 7,900 decline, largely due to seasonal layoffs. Other sectors saw significant job losses, including government, financial activities, construction, manufacturing, professional and business services, and information. The private sector added 16,600 jobs, with private education and health services contributing 95% of this growth.
