The Stopping Addiction and Falls for the Elderly (SAFE) Act (S. 2612/H.R. 1171) aims to increase access to falls prevention services for older Floridians and prevent accidental falls, which are the leading cause of injury and injury-related deaths for Americans aged 65 and older. In Florida, nearly 25% of seniors fall each year. The act would expand access to these services by including a falls risk assessment provided by a physical or occupational therapist as part of Medicare beneficiaries’ annual wellness visit. This benefit would be included at no-cost to patients and would ensure millions of older adults have better access to the care they need to prevent a fall before it occurs. An analysis of claims data found that Medicare beneficiaries who received physical therapy after a fall were 50% less likely to be hospitalized or go to the emergency room for a subsequent injury and 39% less than likely to use opioids in the six months following the fall, highlighting the proven value of physical therapy. The SAFE Act would also reduce health care spending by billions and save taxpayers' hard-earned money.
