New Zealand academic Anne-Marie Brady, a scholar from the University of Canterbury, claims that the police were prevented from speaking openly about China's foreign interference following her book, "Magic Weapons: China’s Political Influence Activities Under Xi Jinping". Her home was burgled twice in 2017 following the publication of the book, with her laptop stolen and her car tampered with. She maintains that CCP agents or sympathisers may have been involved. Despite complaining to police, Brady says they were unable to deal with the issue openly. She also notes that law enforcement has been gradually shifting its understanding of the situation and that the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service and Government Communications Security Bureau have previously appeared before parliamentary inquiries to address foreign interference from Beijing.
