DHS funding lapse is now the longest government shutdown in U.S. history

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has experienced the longest partial government shutdown in U.S. history, surpassing the previous record when the department and the rest of the federal government went without funding from October until mid-November. Negotiations for re-opening of DHS were dealt a setback after House Republicans voted to pass a short-term funding bill, which has no viable path in the Senate. The Senate also passed a bipartisan bill to fund all of DHS except Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection. The shutdown, which began on Feb. 14, is affecting travelers across the country and has led to hundreds of officers quitting and thousands of job cuts.
