A 19-year-old man has been charged with murder in relation to a fatal shooting on March 10 near 55th and Chestnut Ave in Kansas City. The charges stem from prosecutors alleging that the victim was shot after shielding his mother from gunfire. The victim's mother told investigators that her son had asked her to walk near the area and when she saw him, he told her they were following them. Prosecutors allege that Phillips then stepped out of a white sedan and opened fire on both the victim and his mother. The incident was captured on surveillance video and used by automated license plate readers to track the sedan seen before and after the shooting.
