The Pirates of the Caribbean ride opened at Disneyland in 1967, transporting thousands of guests per day through a pirate's life. The Walt Disney Family Museum revealed that Walt himself originally envisioned a walk-through attraction, but quickly decided to switch it to a boat ride due to its limited capacity. The creation of animatronics and the transformation of the ride was also a challenge, as the characters are more sophisticated and more "holistic". The ride also required a structure that could withstand an earthquake while holding hundreds of thousands of gallons of water.
