A new bill from Reps. Johnathan Newman, R-Troy, and Jennifer Gross, R. West Chester, two of Ohio's most anti-abortion lawmakers, aims to require doctors to inform pregnant patients about an unproven abortion reversal protocol, which involves taking progesterone between abortion pills. The proposed law includes a prescribed script with language such as: "It may not be too late to save your pregnancy" and "This process gives your baby a second chance at life." The protocol originated from a 2012 study where four of six patients who took progestone were able to carry their pregnancies to term. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists does not support prescribing progesteron to stop a medication abortion. The bill would also require the Ohio Department of Health to share information about abortion reversal and a hotline for pregnant patients. Both Newman and Gross have gone further than some of their Republican colleagues in opposing abortion, with Newman proposing a bill to treat all abortions like homicides and criminally charge patients who have them. The law is in the early stages of legislative process and would need to pass the House of Representatives and Ohio Senate before heading to Gov. Mike DeWine for approval.
