The US President, President Donald Trump, had to start a war with Iran to learn about the global economy, according to Jonah Goldberg, who argues that the success of the war is dependent on more than military success. He notes that Iran's ability to disrupt the Strait of Hormuz, a key link between the two countries' economies and its ability to strike its neighbors' oil and gas facilities is crucial as Iran has an asymmetric advantage. The administration's efforts to deal with this challenge have included releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, waiving Jones Act rules that require American-flagged and built ships to transport oil for American markets, lifting some sanctions on Russian oil, and a temporary suspension on Iranian oil sanctions for already oil-laden ships parked in the strait. However, he also notes that the administration's strategy could give Iran 10 times more money than President Barack Obama did when he sent them pallets of cash to secure the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
