Alan Mruvka, the founder of E! Entertainment Television network, has purchased a former silk mill in Paterson, New Jersey, for $250 million to convert it into a new 250,000-square-foot complex of sound stages and related facilities. The building, which was previously owned by The Padded Wagon moving and storage company, was the original Reinhardt Mills, a building listed on the New Jersey and National Register of Historic Places. The new complex, Filmology Labs, is expected to begin producing microdramas at a rate of two per month starting in June. The complex will host several productions at a time, each involving a cast and crew totaling 20 to 30 people, using green screen and LED volume rooms, AI and other advanced TV and filmmaking technologies. Filmology Labs is part of a trend of production facilities set to open in New Jersey following the adoption of tax breaks under former Gov. Phil Murphy.
