Tariff refunds put businesses on the spot

The Trump administration has begun building a system to repay businesses billions of dollars in tariffs, with President Trump urging companies not to use the system. The expected payout, which could reach $165 billion, excluding interest, is an unprecedented amount for the government to distribute to U.S. importers. While consumers and some lawmakers are urging businesses to pass down refunds, there is political pressure not to seek refunds. The White House has not yet indicated whether it will appeal a ruling from the nation's top trade court that the government issues refunds.
