Krystie Damsker, a hands-on caregiver and Assistant Manager at Bethpage Day Services hubsite in New York, began to notice health symptoms in 2022 and was diagnosed with advanced-stage renal disease. The symptoms were caused by 80 pounds of fluid buildup in her body. She had to have a catheter in her chest to begin dialysis and had to take a month off work. Despite undergoing treatment, she continued to live her life and showed up at work. Her coworker, Jerri Walker, expressed her desire to donate an organ to help someone in need, but Damskers had reservations about how to ask her for an organ. Walker's kidney was found to be a match and was cleared to donate to someone else. Her donation ultimately helped Damesker receive a kidney.
