Meas: Mass. Legislature falls short on transparency

The Massachusetts Legislature is currently not subject to public records requests, allowing the state auditor to audit them. This privilege has been thwarted by both Democrat and Republican lawmakers, who have blocked State Auditor Diana DiZoglio's attempts to audit the Legislature. Another barrier to transparency is the requirement for a statement of financial interest, which can reveal major investments, shareholdings, and businesses candidates or elected representatives own. Despite this, Meas argues that public pressure is increasing and that any less than full transparency is not acceptable. Despite fierce Democratic opposition to Meas' campaign, not a single Republican state Senator has returned his calls.
