Judge blocks Trump administration plan to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Liberia
Published on March 24, 2026.
A federal judge has temporarily halted plans to deport Salvadoran migrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia to a third country, pending a court ruling. This decision comes after Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons asked for the government to abandon its plans to swiftly remove him to Liberia. The temporary stay keeps in place two previous orders by Judge Paula Xinis that were previously blocked by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This comes amid criticism of federal judges presiding over deportation cases, with some accusing them of overstepping their authorities and acting as "activist judges".
