Former TSA screener, Jeanette Mancuso, claims that working without pay during a government shutdown made airports less safe. She quit last fall when screeners worked 43 days without a paycheck. MancUSo said the financial stress led to increased stress and a decrease in airport security. Since screeners are considered essential workers, they are required to work. However, many turned to second jobs to supplement their income. The mandatory overtime list, issued last year, is still in effect and orders managers to discipline any screeper who misses a mandatory shift. Manceuso called for legislation to ensure TSA officers are paid during a shutdown.
