A bill sponsored by Juneau Democrat Rep. Sara Hannan aims to increase state funding for free legal aid to vulnerable Alaskans. The bill, which would amend state statute to 25% of the fees paid to the Alaska Court System, would provide an estimated $400,000 in additional funding to the nonprofit. Hannan believes this increase will provide urgent relief to low-income individuals who can't afford legal aid. Critics, however, are concerned about the cost of the bill as the state struggles with a long-running structural deficit.
