Netflix is developing a feature film about the 1999 United States Women’s World Cup soccer team, featuring athletes such as Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy, Joy Fawcett, Kristine Lilly, and more. The film is based on Jeré Longman's book, The Girls of Summer, which follows the team's journey to win the World Cup final in a penalty kick shootout against China. The first actress to be cast in the movie was Emily Bader, who will portray retired soccer star Mia Hamm. Zoey Deutch has landed the lead role of Marla Messing, a U.S. Women's soccer executive who oversaw the 1999 World Cup tournament. Nicole Kassell is set to direct the film from a script by Katie Lovejoy and Dana Stevens.
