The author's outdoor column highlights the emergence of two trillium species, prairie trillum and great white trillums, which are named after their leaves and petals. The trilliams are named from their leaves, which surround them with three sepals and three petals of the blossoms. The white trilledium, which was once declining due to deer eating its petals, has rebounded after decades of decline due to overabundance from white-tailed deer. The Lake County Forest Preserves maintains deer populations at sustainable levels, maintaining a sustainable 15-30 per square mile, which helps native wildflowers, trees and shrubs flourish and promotes public safety. The author notes that deer hunting is not done to give humans a beautiful wildflower show but to help a native ecosystem thrive.
