Former Miss USA Carole Gist has reflected on her life before she won the national pageant, which she made history as the first Black Miss USA. She shared her experiences as a teenager, including homelessness and drug abuse. Gist revealed that her mother and biological father had substance abuse issues and she had a bad attitude about their care for their children. She credits another former Miss Michigan USA winner, Anthonia Dotson, for inspiring her to compete.
