Jeffersonville, Indiana, has passed a year-long moratorium on new data center development due to public outcry and major utility disclosures. The council voted 8-0 to halt development for new data centers for one year, pushing the measure through three required readings before regulations can be drafted. The moratorium will not affect the massive Meta data center currently under construction at the River Ridge Commerce Center, which sits on the site of the former Indiana Army Ammunition Plant and is controlled by the Riverridge Development Authority. The city will also work to draft regulations to limit data centers' permitted use in standard industrial zones. To protect neighborhoods from future developments, Councilmember Dustin White proposed a strategy for zoning that allows the Planning Commission to write into the permanent Unified Development Ordinance.
