Published on March 21, 2026.
The Boston Red Sox has named Marcelo Mayer its starting second baseman, following an uneven rookie campaign that included a season-ending wrist injury. Mayer, a 23-year-old natural shortstop, played only 44 games in 2025, hitting.228 with four home runs and 10 RBIs before undergoing wrist surgery. He will now form a double-play combination with veteran shortstop Trevor Story. Meanwhile, Kristian Campbell, last year's Opening Day second baseman for the Red Sox, was sent to the minors after struggling defensively this spring.
