The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) has been criticized by Latino and Latina members for its lack of public statements regarding President Trump's mass deportation campaign. The church issued a statement just a week into the second presidency of Donald Trump, expressing disappointment at the lack of transparency and betrayal felt by many of its immigrant members. Sujey Vega, author of the new book "Mormon Barrio: Latino Belonging in The Mormon Barrio," said that church leaders have been playing the role of welcoming everyone, while reinforcing the need to obey the law without critiquing it. Despite hundreds of thousands of detentions and deportations, the church has yet to publicly comment on the issue.
