Reddit has announced new 'human verification' requirements for bots, following Digg's closure due to bot issues. The company will label automated accounts as "good bots" and will require accounts suspected to be human to verify if they're human. This will only occur if something suggests otherwise, including its activity on the site or technical markers. If an account cannot pass this test, it may be restricted. To identify potential bots, Reddit will use third-party tools like passkeys from Apple, Google, YubiKey, and biometric services like Face ID or World ID. The changes are intended to address the growing problem of bots engaging on social platforms and the web more broadly, often used to influence politics, spread misinformation, inflate popularity, and generate fake ad clicks.
