A report by the California Department of Justice has revealed that conditions inside immigration detention facilities have worsened as the number of detained immigrants has surged. The report stated that California's detained immigrant population increased by over 160% between 2023 and 2025, growing from about 2,300 detainees to over 6,000. It also revealed that six detainee deaths were reported between September 2025 and March 2026, the highest number since California began conducting inspections in 2017. The state's Attorney General, Rob Bonta, stated that overcrowding and staffing shortages are creating dangerous conditions inside these facilities. Despite claims that the crackdown targets violent criminals, many detainees reviewed had little or no criminal history.
