Locals in Southaven, Mississippi have been dealing with the fallout of Elon Musk's artificial intelligence ambitions, after xAI set up shop in the area. The company's makeshift power plant, consisting of 18 methane gas turbines, has been causing constant noise and air pollution. Residents fear that the promise of new jobs and tax revenue won't outweigh the costs. The Mississippi State Conference NAACP has accused xAI of operating its turbines without a permit and worsening air quality in an already polluted area and exacerbating respiratory conditions like asthma. Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite suggested that much of the backlash was politically motivated, but he acknowledged the noise was a problem and said that xAI's permanent turbines would be quieter. In the meantime, xAI has installed a $7 million sound wall to reduce the noise.
