Hampstead Heath island becoming dedicated sanctuary for wildlife
Published on March 31, 2026.
The City of London Corporation, which manages Hampstead Heath as a registered charity, has begun work to remove a land causeway linking the island to the pond's edge. Once removed, the island will no longer be accessible to visitors or pets, allowing wildlife to feed, rest and breed without disturbance. The project has been supported by over £50,000 in public donations and funding from the City Corporation's Climate Action Strategy. The sanctuary will also provide nearly 100 sq m of new reedbeds and wildflower habitat.
