Portland homeownership shifts toward educators

The National Association of Realtors (NAR) has found that those in the education and social services sectors are most likely to own homes in Portland, due to rising housing costs and changing job geography. Homeownership among management and business professionals has decreased over the last decade, dropping from 71% in 2014 to 67% in 2024. This shift was driven by educational professionals rising from 63% to 68%, while skilled trades and construction workers saw significant gains. The biggest drop was for transportation and public safety workers, whose ownership rate dropped from 56% to 48%. NAR's principal economist, Nadia Evangelou, emphasised that housing affordability and job mix influenced local trends.
