The theft of 12 tonnes of KitKats, a shipment of over 413,000 units from Nestle's new KitKat chocolate range, occurred during transit between a factory in central Italy and its intended destination in Poland. The stolen shipment never made it to Poland and is currently unknown where it is located. Nestle has warned that the stolen goods could be distributed through "unofficial sales channels" across European markets. The timing of this incident coincides with Easter approaching, which may cause gaps on store shelves during this busy period. Each bar carries a unique batch code, which can be traced to the thief, and if a match comes up, Nestle will alert KitKat, who will then hand over the evidence to authorities.
