The Supreme Court has narrowed Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which prohibits racially-discriminatory gerrymandering and provides voting protections for people of color across the South, particularly for Black Americans. The ruling means fewer federal guardrails as states redraw political power. The multiracial population is one of the fastest-growing groups, rising by 276% between 2010 and 2020. This shift is increasing the political stakes of redistricting in areas where the Voting Right Act once had its strongest influence. The decision could result in legal battles over how voting protections apply to a rapidly changing electorate.
