Questions have been raised about the nature of the justice system in relation to mental health and the criminal justice system. LAVERNE SCOTT, a convicted sex offender on the NEBRASKA SEX OFFENDER REGISTRY, has been accused of committing another crime. The DOUGLAS County SHERIFF, AARON HANSEN, points out that this case is an example of how mental health struggles are often dealt with in the justice systems. He calls for a solution, stating that the time for change is now. The National Association of Mental Health (NAMI) on MENTAL ILLness has highlighted that nearly 2 in 5 people who are in jail with a history of mental illness are likely to have a history, particularly of individuals with such histories. The NAMI's Executive Director, James MICHAEL BOWERS, also highlighted the need for early intervention and efficient access to medical care. KETV's MADDIE AUGUSTINE investigates the situation and suggests that the solution is a low level of care for individuals with mental health.
