Opponents of a massive multi-billion-dollar data center being built in eastern Independence, Georgia, are challenging a council vote approving the project. The council voted 5 to 2 in favor of the plan, but opponents have filed a petition to put the issue before voters. They plan to collect 3700 signatures in 30 days to get the referendum on the ballot. The petition comes after a contentious city council meeting. The mayor of Independence, Rory Rowland, expressed concern over the loudness of the construction of the data center and power plant. Opponents argue that the city of Independence deserves a vote on a 20-year, 90% tax abatement for a $1 billion corporation.
