An anonymous collector has released an extremely rare first-party Nintendo prototype of Punch-Out, which was auctioned off for over $60,000 earlier this year. The cartridge, which appears to contain an early development build of the game, was released for free study by the anonymous collector. The release of the data was a significant step forward for the preservation community, despite concerns that it devalues their collection if the contents of the cartridge are made public. Frank Cifaldi, founder of the Video Game History Foundation, described the rare cartridge as an "unheard of" early look at NES development.
