Project ICARUS (International Cooperation for Animal Research Using Space) has launched a new satellite in low-Earth orbit to monitor thousands of animals at once. The satellite, partially funded by the National Geographic Society, will be carried out of Earth's orbit by a SpaceX rocket. The project aims to gather granular data on wildlife's whereabouts around the globe, using this data to monitor diseases, predict natural disasters, understand how seed-dispersing birds influence forest canopies, and monitor poachers. The first satellite was launched in 2020 and will only carry ICARU technology. However, logistical delays have prevented the team from sending and receiving data to and from animal tags. With the launch of the second satellite, ICARUs is working towards connecting around 3,000 tags to individual animals.
