Mental Health America of the Heartland works to break stigma, connect community to resources

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a yearly reminder to take care of ourselves. The Heartland chapter of Mental Health America in Kansas City, Kansas, serves the community with resources designed to break the stigma around mental health. Susan Crain Lewis, CEO and president of the chapter, has worked for three decades to combat this stigma. One of the organization's biggest resources is a hotline called Compassionate Ear, which does not diagnose anyone. Willa Stillman, who lives with borderline personality disorder, can help connect people with 2-1-1 or a crisis line and find a therapist.
