California man convicted of first-degree murder after setting father, dog on fire

Joseph Ashley Garcia, 44, of Lompoc, California, has been convicted of first-degree murder for setting his father and a dog on fire during a violent argument. The incident occurred during a domestic dispute at a home where Garcia Jr. was arguing with his father, Joseph Michael Garcia, 68. The dog, who was sitting on Garcia Jr.'s lap, also suffered serious burns. Garcia Jr., initially pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but a jury found him legally sane at the time of the offense. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 6 at the Santa Maria Superior Court.
