A shooting outside Buford's bar in downtown Austin, Texas, has left three people dead and at least 14 others injured after a gunman opened fire outside the bar overnight. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said three officers returned fire and killed the suspect, who was among the dead. The department's swift and coordinated response to the shooting reflects structural changes made since the 2021 mass shooting, which slowed emergency efforts due to crowd congestion and limited access. The Austin Police Association praised the department's ability to reallocate officers from the east side to the west side, which is where the bulk of officers usually patrol. The Counter Assault Strike Team, or CAST team, is an integral part of the response to crisis situations and is a combined response effort between police and paramedics.
