New York City has experienced the safest first quarter of 2026 on record, with 42 people killed in traffic incidents compared to the previous year. This is the third safest start to the year since the city began keeping records over 100 years ago. So far, 23 pedestrians have been killed on the streets of Gotham, down from 29 in the first quarter in 2025, and the fewest number of pedestrians killed during the first three months since 1910. January, February and March were also record-breaking for motor vehicle occupants, with eight people killed while driving or riding in a car or truck. Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn warned that progress is still being made towards reducing traffic deaths. The Department of Transportation attributed the decline in traffic deaths to Vision Zero street redesigns and the expansion of automated, camera-based, speed limit and red light enforcement.
