At 7 Hours Old, Howell Infant Underwent Critical Surgery; Now He's Thriving

Ryan Moser, a newborn who underwent critical surgery at just 7½ hours old, was born with a congenital defect called Meckel’s diverticulum, which occurs in 2 to 3 percent of all babies. His condition was more severe than the team of specialists had anticipated and required immediate surgery. The hospital began caring for Katie through its Healthy Beginnings program and made plans for their response when he was born. Six months after his birth, Ryan continues to grow and thrive. Dr. Mark Kaytan, chief of pediatric surgery at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, said it's rare for an issue as involved and life-threatening as his condition was. Despite initial complications, Ryan's small intestine was left open for two days to allow him to recover and recover.
