Colossal Biosciences, the company behind a genetically engineered dire wolf, has announced plans to resurrect the African bluebuck, a rare antelope that has been extinct for around 200 years. The company has been secretly working to revive the species using a roan antelope as a surrogate mother for the laboratory-grown embryo. The move is seen as a step towards modern hybrids of the woolly mammoth, dodo, and Tasmanian tiger. Ben Lamm, Colossal CEO, said the move would be “reversing some of the sins of the past” and aims to reverse an extinction that is our fault. The project is also Colossal’s first foray into bovids, a group of animals with cloven hoofs and horns that also include cattle, goats and buffalo.
