The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget has proposed capping Social Security payouts at $100,000 per year for couples as part of a plan to prevent it from going broke. This comes after a report by the Congressional Budget Office stated that the main trust funds, the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund, could be insolvent by 2033. This would trigger a 24% cut in benefits. The increase in cost-of-existence payments is also cited as a factor in the aging of the population.
