Independent Hong Kong panel starts hearing into devastating inferno

An independent committee led by a judge investigating the deadly fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, Hong Kong, has begun evidential hearings into the inferno that killed 168 people. The lead lawyer for the panel, Victor Dawes, detailed five major issues, including the shutting down of fire alarms in seven blocks and the removal of staircase and corridor windows to give access to scaffolding for workers, allowing smoke and flames to enter residents' escape routes. CCTV images and videos from the public were reviewed for the committee's review. The panel also received nearly 1 million files including photographs, videos and documents.
